For many years, Mareth has been utterly smitten by the work of Alexander Calder, who took wire and miscellaneous oddments to new heights in artistic expression. She has studied his work over a long period of time and has been highly influenced by the relationship between line (wire) and shapes (in her case, flotsam and jetsam from the beach). She is mesmerized by the effects of line and is in the process of creating a body of work in wire that expresses this love. Her massive collection of found items from the beach are a constant cache from which to choose elements of each sculpture. She has stumbled upon old beach dumps in her wanderings along Pacific Northwest beaches and has discovered that the power of wave action over the past century or so has created elements for her sculptures, both free-standing and created with wire. Her body of sculptural work will be showcased in the near future.
